According to the National Weather Service, subtropical storm Alberto will lift slowly northward across the eastern Gulf of Mexico this weekend before moving toward the central Gulf Coast on Memorial Day. Deep tropical moisture to the east of the system will overspread the area and produce a threat for locally heavy rainfall, particularly Saturday afternoon through Monday. Numerous showers and thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours are expected to develop each day. Areas that see several rounds of heavy rainfall could pick up several inches of rain. This could lead to flooding of roadways, low-lying and poor drainage areas, especially in areas that have seen heavy rainfall over the past 10 days. We ask residents to use caution when traveling and avoid roads that are flooded.

The rain event that we are experiencing is tropical in nature with highly variable rainfall amounts and periods of heavy rain. This weather pattern is expected to remain in place until early next week. Due to the volume of rainfall (estimated 11 to 13 inches over the past eight days), the City’s drainage systems are operating at capacity. In the early hours this morning, approximately 4.5 inches of rain fell over the eastern areas of the City and the water levels at the Blackwell and Tiffany Pump Stations increased by three feet over a four-hour period. There was localized flooding on several roadways including: Blackwell Drive, Melaleuca Boulevard and Lennard Road. The flooding on Tiger Lane was due to a blocked culvert which was cleared. The water is subsiding from the roads and, weather permitting, water levels at the pump stations will return to the control elevation by this evening. At this time, there are no road closures. Please exercise caution as you travel around the City as water is collecting on the low areas of the roadways and potholes are forming because of the standing water. City staff will continue to monitor the situation and take additional actions as needed.
