Thanks to participation from consumers and advocates on the ground, smokers in Washington will continue to have access to low-risk alternatives to smoking, at least for the next year. Great talking points when calling in to oppose HB-1054 from our friends at SSVL: HB1054 passed in the House tonight. It’s one of the Age 21 bills we’ve been monitoring and it had both democratic and republican support. The actual roll call was 63-35 so it wasn’t even close. It now moves to the Senate for their vote on Thursday, March 8th. This is where we have our biggest opportunity to “Kill the Bill”. We NEED to go to the well one more time. One more effort at calling the Legislative Hotline at 800-562-6000 and tell them the following, in your words: There are 29 tribal reservations in WA state where the 18-20 year old crowd will purchase tobacco and vaping products. Passing this bill only hurts NON-TRIBAL businesses and 18-20 year old employees will lose their jobs in NON-TRIBAL retail stores as well. Not only will the state lose tax revenue by increasing the age to 21, but it is also “picking and choosing winners”; shuffling business to tribal nations and neighboring states while choosing to hurt NON-TRIBAL businesses. Strongly oppose this bill! -
